Grassy, annual plant up to 60 cm high, with lanceolate-linear grey-green leaves. The upper leaves are whole, and the lower ones are slightly vane. Single flower baskets blue or blue, edge flowers funnel-shaped, and medium - tubular. Flowering abundantly from May to August. Used in landscaping and for cutting. Bouquets from cornflowers are elegant and remain in water for a long time. Plants are cold resistant, light-loving. Sow in the ground early in spring or in winter. When & Where to Plant Cornflower Light: Full sun, open fields. Soil: Moist, well-drained soil. Can tolerate drought conditions, once established. Spacing: Allow 8-12 inches in between plants. Planting: Sow seeds in early spring for summer blooming plants. In more moderate climates, seeds can be sown in early fall, and established plants will bloom the following spring and summer.
Companion Plants: In the garden, they are visually stunning planted with brightly colored Nasturtiums, Marigold and California Poppies. In a vase, they blend well with Snapdragons, Sweet William and Love-in-a-Mist or Nigella. Additional Uses: Cornflowers have been used as a natural plant dye, and are edible and can used as a garnish for the plate.
